Data points like these understandably generate anxiety in the news industry, but we should remember that young people might be consuming current affairs information differently, adopting an alternative definition of what qualifies as news. This is challenging to investigate using survey data alone, but our qualitative research over the years suggests young people tend to possess broader news definitions beyond traditional subjects like politics, crime, and business – a distinction between 'news' (broader) and 'the news' (more traditional) (Collao 2022). As we'll observe later in the analysis, their definition includes (more) personally relevant and entertaining topics.
